The main component of Malarkey Highlander shingles is the NEX® polymer modified asphalt technology. The formula combines high-grade asphalt with recycled plastic polymers and a rubber core that can withstand harsh weather and impacts, enhancing the shingle’s elasticity and longevity.
Other Highlander® features include:
- Backing shims double the length of average shingles.
- A large nailing area up to twice the size of standard shingles.
- Double the adhesive bonds compared to standard shingles.

Tear strength: All shingles must meet the ASTM D3462 manufacturing standard before they are used by contractors. Highlander® roofing shingles have tear strength that is 10% more durable than the average shingle.
Fire resistance: These shingles have the highest fire rating of Class A for protection and peace of mind.
Impact resistance: Malarkey Highlander shingles have a Class 3 hail impact rating, the second highest after Class 4.
Granule adhesion: Granules add texture and color to shingles, mainly protecting them from UV damage. They must be adhesive enough to withstand lifting from high winds and impacts. Highlander® shingles provide approximately 65% more adhesion than standard shingles.
